
Lesson 1: IPA & Listening
1. Objectives
- Understand about the IPA (Hiểu về IPA - Bảng phiên âm quốc tế)
- Identify the sound /i/ and /i:/ (Phân biệt 2 âm /i/ và /i:/)
- Identify new words about jobs (Nhận dạng từ vựng về công việc)
- Get used to the active listening and dictation method (Làm quen phương pháp nghe chủ động và chép chính tả)
2. Vocabulary
There are 4 steps for students to review the vocabulary at home:
- Step 1: Look closely at the picture, click on the sign (+) and read the word.
- Step 2: Open it and listen to the word carefully
- Step 3: Read the English meaning and Vietnamese meaning
- Step 4: After finishing all the words, read the words one more time
3. Sound /i/ and /i:/
3.1 /i:/ sound
- This is pronounced by pressing the sides of the tongue against the upper teeth with just a little space between the middle of the tongue and the roof of the mouth
- The mouth is slightly open and the lips are spread
- Examples of words containing this /i:/ sound are bee, need, machine, sea, receive, we, these, seize, be, free, tree, Peter, beans, seem, beat, leaf, deceive, people, quay, key, eat, meet, leaf, cheek, etc.
3.2 /i/ sound
- The tongue is not as high as when you pronounce /i:/.
- The side of the tongue touches the upper teeth slightly
- The tongue is relaxed and the mouth is slightly opened
4. Listening Practice
There are 3 steps for students to practice listening at home:
- Step 1: Listen carefully for the first time
- Step 2: Read the script and record your voice (Choose 2 of 5 people)
- Step 3: Do the practice test to review
