
Lesson 3: Words and Speaking
1. Objectives
- Identify the sound /a:/ and /ʌ/ (Nhận dạng và phân biệt 2 âm /a:/ và /ʌ/)
- Discuss about home and accomodation (Trao đổi về nhà ở)
2. Vocabulary
There are 4 steps for students to review the vocabulary at home:
- Step 1: Look closely at the picture, click on the sign (+) and read the word.
- Step 2: Open it and listen to the word carefully
- Step 3: Read the English meaning and Vietnamese meaning
- Step 4: After finishing all the words, read the words one more time
3. Sound /a:/ and /ʌ/
3.1 Sound /ʌ/
The /ʌ/ sound is often spelled with the letter ‘o’ as in the words:
- some /sʌm/
- company /‘kʌmpəni/
But is is also often spelled with a ‘u’ or ‘o-u’. As in the words:
- much /mʌtʆ/
- country /‘kʌntri/
Like with all vowels in English, the spelling can be very inconsistent and you will always find alternative and unusual spellings of the vowels sounds. It is one of the most difficult things in English but you just have to learn it.
3.2 Sound /a:/
The ɑ: sound is normally spelled with the letters ‘a-r’ as in the words:
- start /stɑːt/
- part /pɑːt/
- large /lɑːdʒ/
- party /ˈpɑːI/
Like with all vowels in English, the spelling can be very inconsistent and you will always find alternative and unusual spellings of the vowels sounds. It is one of the most difficult things in English but you just have to learn it.
